The EURO-MED Centre was created by the Department of Political Studies in 1997 to develop research on Euro-Mediterranean relations, comparative politics, and international relations. In the years 1998-2005, an agreement between the University of Catania and the European Commission in the framework of the Jean Monnet Action, acknowledges the Centre as European Centre of Excellence to develop multildisciplinary activities relating to the construction of the European Union and the process of cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean area. In 1998 and 1999, the Centre held The Summer School on "The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership". In 2000, a Masters Course in Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Studies was given to graduate students from different countries. Fields of action are research, teaching and information. Current research is on Euro-Mediterranean relations and politics, EU foreign and defence policy, and the EU space of freedom, security and justice. Teaching consists of the Jean Monnet Chair of European Union Politics, occasional Modules, Courses, and Seminars on themes of political and scientific interest, and in facilitating the Master Course on “Global Politics and Euro-Mediterranean Relations” and the Jean Monnet Action programmes of the staff members. The EURO-MED Centre has observer status to EUROMESCO |
